CASE STUDY: 1

Manchester United FC

In 1993 our company was awarded the contract for Manchester United Football Club's Old Trafford Stadium. This was the first stadium in the country to be fitted with a PA/VA system that was fully compliant with all relevant standards at that time.

The primary function of the system was to provide highly intelligible Voice Alarm and Public Address announcements to comply with the requirements of BS7443 and BS5839 in an environment that often had very high ambient noise levels.

We are very proud to have been retained by the club as their Specialist Sound Contractor since then.

In 2005 when the club decided to increase their ground capacity to 75,000 we were commissioned to design, supply, install and commission a replacement system that would cope with the increased capacity and provide full range music for entertainment purposes.

We worked closely with Peter Mapp who acts as the clubs Acoustic Consultant to provide a design that would meet the specification given by the client. The new system was based around the latest Digital Technology for Signal Routing and Processing (DSP). Touch screen paging microphone consoles with bespoke graphical indication and fault reporting software were included.

A complex matrix of full range high quality loudspeakers and associated amplifiers were provided. The club is now the proud owner of what we consider to be a world class sound system.

A maintenance contract is in place to ensure that the system is kept up to specification at all times. A remote fault diagnostic facility is included that allows us direct on-line access to the system from anywhere to assist with our maintenance backup.

During the recent upgrade of the stadium to increase crowd capacity some additional function suites were added to cope with the demand for hospitality packages. We were approached by Peter Mapp who is retained by the club as their Acoustic Consultant to develop sophisticated local systems that could be used within all function suites within the stadium.

The brief was that the system had to be user friendly, good quality, reliable, flexible and cost effective. The system had to include Radio Microphones, Music Source and Remote Input Panels with volume controls and source selection.

Our design was based around the TOA-D901 Digital Mixer with Sennheiser Radio microphones and a computer based Background Music System with music specifically tailored for each function suite.

To date 14 Function Suites have been fitted and a similar solution has been provided for the Press Conference Room.

The National Stadium - Hampden Park - Glasgow

Hampden Park in Glasgow is Scotland's National Stadium and is home to Queens Park F.C. and Scotland's National Football Team. It is also used for music concerts and other sporting events.

The stadium has hosted European Cup & UEFA Cup finals. During the 2012 Olympic Games it will be used to host early stages of the football tournament. Hampden will be the key stadium of the 2014 Commonwealth Games where it will host Athletics events.

When the stadium was converted to an all seated venue during the 1990's we installed a PA/VA system that was fully compliant with the relevant standards at that particular time; the final phase was completed in 1999. In 2004 a new Digital Routing Matrix (DSP) was installed with associated amplification and the loudspeaker system in the bowl seating area was upgraded to music quality to enhance the match day experience. The system is used to great effect during home International Matches and major Cup Finals to motivate and entertain the crowd.

A maintenance contract is in place to ensure that the system is regularly checked and kept up to specification.

AVIVA Stadium - Lansdowne Road – Dublin

In May 2008 following a lengthy tender process T. G. Baker (Sound) Ltd were awarded the contract for the design, supply and commissioning of a high quality voice Alarm & Music System for the new 50,000 seat AVIVA Stadium at Lansdowne Road in Dublin.

The AVIVA Stadium is home to the Irish Rugby Union Team and The Republic of Ireland National Football Team.

The stadium roof was designed to undulate in a wave-like manner to avoid blocking light to nearby houses. The stadium has four tiers but the North Stand is only a single tier due to the close proximity of local housing.

The structure of the stand with its unusual shape presented a challenge for our design team. Bespoke clusters of full range loudspeakers were used to provide the specified sound pressure levels with uniform coverage for both speech and music.

The system uses the latest digital technology for signal routing and monitoring. Touch-screen panels have been included for the main paging consoles. The system was completed on time and within budget.

The stadium was officially opened on the 14th May 2010 by the Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

The AVIVA Stadium is Ireland’s first and only UEFA Elite Stadium and it will host the Europa League Final in 2011.
