RAF Lossiemouth’s Typhoon hangars require public address provision suited to large, acoustically challenging spaces. TG Baker developed a system design to serve the hangars and associated offices, combining local paging with emergency announcements from the main base broadcast system.

Advise

The brief required announcements from two local paging microphones alongside the ability to broadcast emergency messages from the wider base. The size and reverberant nature of the hangars made loudspeaker selection particularly important: the design needed to direct speech towards listeners while limiting sound travelling into reflective areas.

Plan

We based the design on Tannoy QFlex intelligent loudspeaker technology. Its steerable coverage allows sound to be directed towards occupied areas, with control over both near and far listening positions. This provided a way to shape coverage around the hangar environment and address the acoustic challenges of a large, reflective space.

Deliver

Our design brought together the hangar and office public address requirements, two local paging positions and provision for emergency broadcasts from the main base system. The proposed QFlex solution used electronically controlled sound dispersion to tailor coverage to the application, supporting intelligible announcements across the intended listening areas.

Support

The design supports two distinct operational needs: local communication within the hangar facilities and emergency messaging from the wider station. Configurable loudspeaker coverage provides scope to tailor the system’s sound distribution to the space it serves.
